Error is a Coward Before Truth
This week’s Lesson Sermon Subject: Truth

Morning Prayer
There is no insufficiency of any kind in Truth, in infinite Love.
Good is ever-present, and is the only reality of existence; this renders evil obsolete.
There is nothing present or has power apart from God that has any reality.
Error cannot strangle, smother or choke the Truth or its manifestation and the Truth cannot be reversed.
There is no belief of evil in the bodily senses that has any reality, and that is the Truth and cannot be reversed.

Daily Watch
452 — WATCH lest you hesitate to use the absolute Truth when you should, since so much stress is laid on the necessity for detecting and handling the claim of evil. Mrs. Eddy once said, “Meet every false claim with the absolute Truth; nothing short of that will answer. John 8:32.”
In 1878 Mrs. Eddy startled an association meeting with the absolute statement: “I am infallible now.” There were about ten members present, and she made this statement in answer to the query, “Should we say, or can we truthfully say, we as individuals are perfect, pure, holy, or infallible now?”
Mrs. Eddy’s strong stand had the effect of instantaneously healing some who were present. It chemicalized some. The one who asked the question was so wrought up that he coldly left the meeting. Some said they felt worse, which Mrs. Eddy declared was as good as if they felt better.
In the midst of the storm produced by Mrs. Eddy’s assertion, she kindly said, “I have told the truth.” She took the absolute stand as God guided her to, and to this day the strength of that truth, and of her faith in it can be felt, and always will be.

Evening Prayer by Mary Baker Eddy
“To answer Pilate’s famous question, “What is truth?” we need to recognize the difference between what appears to be true and what really is true. Jesus showed this necessity when he said, “Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.” The material senses judge appearances, but spiritual discernment alone judges what is true.”
Appearances change, but God and His works never change. “I am the Lord, I change not.” “The works were finished from the foundation of the world.” What appears to the physical senses is not the truth. The truth is a statement of the eternal realities of being; it is not one thing today and another thing tomorrow. … Christian Science teaches that if appearances are unlike the divine nature, God didn’t make them, and they are neither true nor real. The eternal truth of God, held clearly and strongly in consciousness, is the one thing that can cure sickness and sin. “Paul says, “Now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.” He sums up the whole matter when he urges us to be not conformed to this world (the evidence of the physical senses), but to be transformed by the renewing of the mind (accepting and assimilating metaphysical or spiritual truth instead of the testimony of the senses), that we may prove (by destroying sin and healing sickness) what is that perfect and acceptable will of God.”
“The fact is that sense testimony as to disease and sin can be denied, and its seeming power canceled by the acceptance of the truth as taught in Christian Science. Jesus said, “Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” Jesus himself used his knowledge of Truth to correct the sense testimony of thousands, healing them of all manner of disease and sin. He left a command for his disciples in all ages to preach the gospel and heal the sick, saying, “The works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do.”
Excerpts from the article “What is Truth” by Rev. G. A. Kratzer
“Obedience to Truth gives man power and strength. Submission to error superinduces loss of power.” Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy p.184
We have been discussing a lot the last few weeks about that power which comes from God and obeying Him and challenging anything that would take us down the road of negative victim thinking, a loss of power. Gideon did not roll up in a ball of hopelessness when faced by the terror of the invaders but responded to God’s call to overthrow the idol of Baal in his camp and face the enemy under God’s direction. We are warned at length about the downfall of blame and victim thinking and the importance of not forgetting the moral and spiritual law. This week’s Lesson covers obedience to moral and spiritual law which gives strength, healing and a way out. Mrs. Eddy tells us if we submit to error we lose power. This is exactly what I am doing when I blame and feel the victim. It can be very hard to break the mesmerism of this negative thinking but thanks to Christ Jesus, Mrs. Eddy, and this church we have practical strategies.
The moral law tells me to follow the First Commandment. I can catch myself starting to blame instead of entering the negative zone I can ask myself, “Do I want to stay stuck?” “What or who am I giving power/control over me that is not God?” “What am I excusing?” “Where am I placing my happiness?” I can attack victim thinking with specific Truths. I can be proactive and make choices. Talk with God. Memorize scripture, lines from Mrs. Eddy’s writings. Be grateful. Do work for God. Ask God, “What do I need to do here?” This is just a small list of things that we have been given to do.
A post from 2018 called “OBEDIENCE TO TRUTH”
Golden Text: Psalm 25 : 4, 5
“Shew me thy ways, O Lord; teach me thy paths. Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day.”
Verse Psalms 25:4. Show me thy ways — The psalmist wishes to know God’s way, to be taught his path, and to be led into his truth. He cannot discern this way unless God show it; he cannot learn the path unless God teach it; and he cannot walk in God’s truth unless God lead him: and even then, unless God continue to teach, he shall never fully learn the lessons of his salvation; therefore he adds, “Lead me in thy truth, and teach me;” Psalms 25:5.
That he may get this showing, teaching, and leading, he comes to God, as the “God of his salvation;” and that he may not lose his labour, he “waits on him all the day.” Many lose the benefit of their earnest prayers, because they do not persevere in them. They pray for a time; get remiss or discouraged; restrain prayer; and thus lose all that was already wrought for and in them.
From Clarke’s Commentary on Bible Hub
The steps that reach the attainment of answered prayer are these:
1st A spiritual perception of our divine resources.
2nd A mental laying hold of these resources by affirming their reality and our right to them.
3rd The continuance of this affirmation until our consciousness reaches the state of clear spiritual realization; this, clearly held will — in the words of Science and Health — bring the things of Life, Truth and Love into a demonstration. To repeat: Keeping clearly before us the Truth — that in the limitless treasuries of God there is a present supply for every need. True prayer is a spiritual perception, an affirmation, a realization, and a demonstration of these resources of Life and Love.
8. Ephesians 4 : 17 (walk not), 22 (put)-27, 29, 31, 32
17 … walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,
22 … put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;
23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
25 Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.
26 Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:
27 Neither give place to the devil.
29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:
32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.

THE INFINITESIMALS, from Addresses vol. 6, pages 46-50, by Herbert Rieke
In Science and Health, we read, “The divine Ego, or individuality, is reflected in all spiritual individuality from the infinitesimal to the infinite.” (p.336)
Throughout history, people have spent much time contemplating the nature of the infinite. You have all gone outside on a starry night, looking up at the moon and stars, thinking about how far away it all is. You have contemplated the existence of the galaxies of stars, and then the super-galaxies beyond. Possibly in the words of David, you have said, “Unto thee lift I up my eyes, O thou that dwellest in the heavens.” (Ps. 123) People have always thought that God was in the heavens because they knew that God was infinite in power and understanding; the heavens seemed to symbolize that thought of infinity, the unlimited nature of things.
Noting the harmony, the order, the beauty of the heavens, Amos said, “Seek him that maketh the seven stars and Orion.” Job, standing in awe of the divine government of the universe, exclaimed,
“Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion? Canst thou bring forth Mazzaroth in his season? Or canst thou guide Arcturus with his sons!
Knowest thou the ordinances of heaven?” (Job 38:31-33) It is good to look outward, upward, and heavenward – to contemplate and appreciate the infinite.
But our passage says, “The divine Ego — is reflected in all spiritual individuality from the infinitesimal to the infinite.” It’s not enough to contemplate the perfection and order of the infinite. We must see the perfection and orderliness of the infinitesimal as well.
Natural Scientists through powerful microscopes are peering deeper and deeper into the infinitesimals and are discovering worlds never dreamed of before, just as the astronomers are discovering galaxies which we had never thought existed. Physicists, through their experiments, are penetrating deeper and deeper into the “hidden things” of the world. At first, they discovered the molecules, then the atom, then the interior of the atom with its nucleus, electrons, and other basic elements. They are so overawed by the beauty and harmony of what they have found that they are writing books, such as I discussed last year, entitled, “The Music of The Spheres.”
Mrs. Eddy did not think of the stars, the sun, the moon, the planets, as material objects. She defines sun as the symbol of Soul governing man. Then she says, “Suns and planets teach grand lessons. The stars make night beautiful…” (S&H p. 240) She says that the glorious heavens point to Mind, the spiritual intelligence they reflect.
Mrs. Eddy also did not think of the infinitesimals as material. On page 507 of the textbook she says, “Infinite Mind creates and governs all, from the mental molecule to infinity.” In Miscellaneous Writings (p. 26) she asks, “Whence came the first seed, and what made the soil? Was it molecules, or material atoms? Whence came the infinitesimals, – from the infinite Mind, or from matter? If from matter, how did matter originate? Was it self-existent?” The implication is that Mrs. Eddy saw the infinitesimals as spiritual and not material — they come from Mind. In Science and Health (p. 502:29-4) she says, “This creation consists of the unfolding of spiritual ideas and their identities, which are embraced in the infinite Mind and forever reflected.
“These ideas range from the infinitesimal to infinity…” She says of the false concept of the atom, The material atom is an outlined falsity of consciousness.” But that’s only the false concept of the atom or infinitesimal. Mrs. Eddy was ever busy resolving things into thoughts and exchanging the objects of material sense for the ideas of Soul. Therefore, she could say on page 190 of Miscellaneous Writings, “Atomic action is Mind, not matter. It is neither the energy of matter, the result of organization, nor the outcome of life infused into matter: it is infinite Spirit, Truth, Life, defiant of error or matter. Divine Science demonstrates Mind as dispelling a false sense and giving the true sense of itself, God, and the universe. May I repeat, “Atomic action is Mind” with a capital M, “not matter.”
Because we are thinking rightly about the infinitesimals, the atoms, the molecules, the thought of the world is beginning to change and to see the truth about the basic reality of all phenomena. This year I had the opportunity to read three papers written by Donald Hatch Andrews, professor of chemistry at John Hopkins University. I would like to share a few of his observations.
He says, “Today there is a new element of hope with us, because this same science which has given us atomic power, has also given us atomic vision. Through the microscope, the spectroscope, and the telescope, we are getting an entirely new view of the basic realities of which both the universe and we ourselves are made. And we are making the startling discovery that, in a word, the basic reality of our universe is not matter but music. We find that the materialistic philosophy of nineteenth century science is no longer tenable.
We are not quite sure what the new philosophy of the twentieth-century science is, but we see that the most fundamental concepts appear to be based on relationships of harmony and resonance, rather than on mass and mechanics.” He says further, “Somehow we of the human race must learn to control ourselves before we can control our power. The crucial question is, WIll our new science help us to achieve a new wisdom of the spirit, a new sense of destiny.”
Speaking about peering into the nature of the infinitesimal, Professor Andrews goes on to say, “As we look and listen, we see first of all ripples and waves moving around with the electrons, like the ripples and waves on a pond when a stone is dropped in it. We hear a humming like a hive of bees, and if we turn up our hearing aid we become aware of overwhelming music all around us, although hitherto we have been completely unaware of it. We realize that we are listening to a vast symphony. The range of tones extends many octaves beyond anything we have ever heard in a concert hall… As this music surges around us we come to realize that it is here in these patterns of harmony, melody, and counterpoint, that we have the true reality, the essence of what it is that creates what we see, what we feel, what we are.”
He goes on to say, “Our new science thus teaches us both that seeing is not believing, and that we must believe in much that we do not see.” Here is another interesting statement: “When the seed is planted there is somehow power in that music of life within it which can reach out and compel the surrounding oxygen and nitrogen and moisture to do its bidding.” He goes on,
“In the same way, the mysterious music of life in a seed or in a human being, transcends the vehicle of its functioning. Thus we recognize according to this logic, that in the innermost essence of life we have the implications of the supreme reality — call it ego, soul, spirit, or what you will.” And to top it off, listen to this one: “If we can keep throughout our lives a vivid sense of this reality of the spirit of the presence of our Creator, the vision of the invisible kingdom, the eternal verity to which science itself gives affirmation, then we can go forward confidently into this new atomic age on the road to a high destiny. And in the day when mankind shall finally establish peace and good will on earth, we may see at last the deepest meaning in the words, ‘Ye shall know the Truth and the Truth shall make you free.'”
In another paper Dr. Andrews says, “These electron waves which we thus hear, are neither sound waves nor light waves, and many scientists feel that they are not strictly physically real.” He says, “Because music is in reality also pure, dynamic form, I think it is both suggestive and meaningful to say that the atom now appears to be music.” He ends this paper with these statements, “If we can tune our inner-ear to hear this music of the universe all around us and within us, perhaps we can learn to discriminate its hyper-harmonies, and apprehend the message of its song. I believe that it is a message full of joy and beauty, but also a call to sacrifice and duty. Today outer space is challenging a new Columbus to set forth on an extra-planetary voyage of discovery. Just as truly, these inner spaces of the spirit are calling for a new Kierkegaard, or a new Einstein to voyage together on an exploration of their uncharted seas. Man is not a puppet in a box. The boundaries of the dimensions of man are the mansions of eternity.”
When you hear such words from a foremost physical scientist as to the nature of the infinitesimals, are you not proud to be a Christian Scientist? And do you not recognize that you have been on the right road in studying this true science of Christianity?
The basic reality of your being, the very substance of your existence, is not dust particles nor bits of flesh. The basic reality of your being is music, beautiful, symphonic music, more glorious than the world has ever heard. If you’ve been thinking about yourself, or your body, as material, you’re all wrong. The ultimate of you is concord, harmony, music. It was brought out in Dr. Andrews’ paper that it’s not a physical music, but truly spiritual music.
It’s the song of angels — that’s what you’re really made up of.
Beloved brethren, have no discord over music. Hold in yourselves the true sense of harmony, and this sense will harmonize, unify, and unself you. Once I was passionately fond of material music, but jarring elements among musicians weaned me from this love and wedded me to spiritual music, the music of Soul. Thus it is with whatever turns mortals away from earth to heaven; we have the promise that “all things work together for good to them that love God,” — love good. … Music is more than sound in unison. The deaf Beethoven besieges you with tones intricate, profound, commanding. Mozart rests you. To me his composition is the triumph of art, for he measures himself against deeper grief. I want not only quality, quantity, and vari ation in tone, but the unction of Love. Music is divine. Mind, not matter, makes music; and if the divine tone be lacking, the human tone has no melody for me. Adelaide A. Proctor breathes my thought: —
It flooded the crimson twilight
Like the close of an angel’s psalm,
And it lay on my fevered spirit
With a touch of infinite calm.

“God to Earth … God to Earth … Come In, Please” by Parthens
4. 325 : 20-11
Paul had a clear sense of the demands of Truth upon mortals physically and spiritually, when he said: “Present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.” But he, who is begotten of the beliefs of the flesh and serves them, can never reach in this world the divine heights of our Lord. The time cometh when the spiritual origin of man, the divine Science which ushered Jesus into human presence, will be understood and demonstrated.
When first spoken in any age, Truth, like the light, “shineth in darkness, and the darkness comprehended it not.” A false sense of life, substance, and mind hides the divine possibilities, and conceals scientific demonstration.
If we wish to follow Christ, Truth, it must be in the way of God’s appointing. Jesus said, “He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also.” He, who would reach the source and find the divine remedy for every ill, must not try to climb the hill of Science by some other road. All nature teaches God’s love to man, but man cannot love God supremely and set his whole affections on spiritual things, while loving the material or trusting in it more than in the spiritual.
